But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.

2 Peter 3:18 NIV

In the closing words of his second letter, the apostle Peter leaves us with a powerful exhortation: “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” This concise verse holds a wealth of spiritual guidance and wisdom for our Christian journey.

  • Growth in Grace: The first part of the verse emphasizes the importance of growing in grace. Grace is the unmerited favor of God that forgives our sins, offers us salvation, and empowers us to live a Christ-centered life. Grace can also be defined as “God’s riches made available to man through Christ or every resource made available to man” Rev. Edwin Langmer” Thus in John 1:17 & Romans 3:24. As believers, we are called to continually deepen our understanding and experience of God’s grace. This growth enables us to extend grace to others, even in challenging circumstances.
  • Growth in Knowledge: The second part of the verse encourages us to grow in knowledge. Knowledge here refers not just to intellectual understanding but to a deep, personal knowledge of Jesus Christ. This knowledge comes through studying the Word of God, prayer, and a relationship with Jesus. As we grow in knowledge, our faith becomes stronger, and our love for Christ deepens.
  • The Object of Our Growth: Peter emphasizes that our growth should be centered on Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. He is the source of grace, the embodiment of knowledge, and the anchor of our faith. To know Him more deeply and to reflect His character in our lives should be our ultimate aim.
  • Eternal Glory: The verse concludes with a beautiful acknowledgment of God’s glory, both now and forever. Our journey of growth in grace and knowledge ultimately leads to the glorification of God. It’s a reminder that our lives should bring honor and praise to Him, not just in this life but for all eternity. 2 Peter 3:18 is a call to a lifelong journey of spiritual growth. It’s an invitation to embrace God’s grace, seek deeper knowledge of Christ, and ultimately bring glory to our Lord and Savior. As we continue on this path, may we be transformed into vessels of His love and grace, shining His light to a world in need. Amen.
